Addressing AI Bias in South Asian Contexts
AI bias is a well-documented challenge, but most research and mitigation strategies focus on Western contexts. At CIAIR, we re exploring how AI bias manifests in South Asian societies and developing approaches tailored to our unique social, cultural, and economic landscape.
Understanding Contextual Bias
AI systems can perpetuate and amplify existing societal biases. In Sri Lanka and across South Asia, these biases may relate to:
- Language and script differences
- Regional variations
- Caste and class structures
- Gender norms specific to South Asian contexts
- Rural-urban divides
- Educational access disparities
Standard bias detection and mitigation techniques may miss these contextual factors if they re developed primarily for Western societies.
Our Research Approach
Our team is taking a multi-faceted approach to addressing these challenges:
1. Contextual Data Auditing
We ve developed auditing frameworks specifically designed to identify biases relevant to South Asian contexts. This includes analyzing:
- Representation across different linguistic communities
- Inclusion of rural and non-urban perspectives
- Gender representation that accounts for local cultural contexts
- Class and caste representation
2. Community-Based Evaluation
We engage diverse communities in evaluating AI systems, ensuring that our assessment of "fairness" incorporates multiple perspectives. This participatory approach helps identify biases that might be missed by purely technical evaluations.
3. Culturally-Informed Mitigation Strategies
We re developing bias mitigation techniques that account for the specific characteristics of South Asian languages, cultural references, and social structures.
Case Study: Employment Matching System
We recently evaluated an AI-powered employment matching system being deployed in Sri Lanka. Our contextual audit revealed:
- The system significantly favored candidates from Colombo and other urban centers
- Candidates with English names received higher match scores than those with Sinhala or Tamil names, even with identical qualifications
- Female candidates were disproportionately matched with lower-paying positions
By applying our contextual bias mitigation techniques, we were able to reduce these disparities by over 70% while maintaining the overall performance of the system.
Looking Forward
Creating truly fair AI systems requires ongoing work and constant vigilance. We re continuing to refine our methodologies and develop open-source tools that can help developers across South Asia build more equitable AI systems.
